Importance of Regular Exercise

When I first started out in the fitness industry as a worldly 18 year old I was shocked to find that not everyone exercises regularly. I grew up and exercised daily and assumed that was a way of life for most peole, however as a personal trainer fresh out of training I was bewildered to find this was not the case.

Since then I have had 11 years of industry experience and I now understand that there are a number of reasons that people don’t exercise regularly or have never seriously exercised before.

Family influence, upbringing, financial situation, personal circumstance, health, location and many more contributing factors may lead to why you or someone you know isn’t an avid exerciser.

What is undisputed are the health benefits of regular exercise and the positive impact I has on all areas of life.

Did you know;

-          Resistance training increases bone density reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

-          Just 30min of cardio vascular training each day can condition your heart and lungs and keep body fat levels at bay.

-          Regular exercises of any kind promotes the brain to release endorphins, neurotransmitters responsible for improving our mood.

-          Resistance training increases muscle mass which secures and stabilises the joints.

-          Core exercise reduces the most common muscular and structural complaint – lower back soreness.

Whether you choose to do 30min of exercises per day as the CSIRO recommends or you adopt a rigorous resistance training routine the evidence overwhelming points towards positive health benefits.

Aside from the physical health benefits the mental and psychological benefits of regular exercise are reason enough to get started.

If you fall into the category of a ‘non-exerciser’ I recommend that you get started with what you have. Go for a walk, ride your bike, swim in the pool or park further from work than usual. Take baby steps in order to begin creating a routine, but get started NOW.

Tomorrow has been called the best labour saving device in the world – there’s always another tomorrow! What steps can you take RIGHT NOW to get you closer to being considered a regular exerciser?

Your time is now – get moving – start with what you have – begin to love the feeling of feeling good!
